Husband and wife florists have branched out and opened a cafe.

West Malling Cafe, in West Street – run by independent flower shop owners Nikki and Russell Meader – has opened its doors to the public today.

The couple have launched the new venture in the hope it will fill a gap in the market.

"The town was crying out for a good old fashioned cafe," Nikki explained.

"We decided to create something that could serve the workers in West Malling, as a lot of the other establishments don't provide a hot meal.

"Also we wanted to provide good food for the older community, who may want to pop in to socialise."

The husband and wife duo already successfully manage West Malling Flowers on the high street, which has been running for more than 10 years.

Previously, the cafe was called 'Ragamuffins' and specialised in vegetarian and vegan food.

They closed on Friday, September 30, after the owner decided to pursue other interests.

It is part of a Grade II-listed building and sits between Varoshe Bespoke Jewellers and tattoo shop, Defined Lines.

Nikki said: "The unit that we've bought has always been a cafe and has changed several hands over the past 20 years.

"We just felt like it's what the community wanted and needed.

"I have to say it is a bit of an unknown area for us, but really it's Russells passion – he set it all up."

The pair will serve hot and cold drinks, made to order sandwiches and wraps, as well as hot food such as soups, jacket potatoes and full English breakfasts.

A takeaway service will also be available.

"Everyone has been really positive about it," Nikki added.

"The community is behind us and they have supported us branching out ever since we told them six weeks ago.
