A school has sent out a letter to parents after a number of students were sent an “indecent image” via email.

The Weald of Kent Grammar School in Tudeley Lane, Tonbridge, fell victim to a cyber-attack last week.

The school teaches 11 to 18-year-old girls and has around 2,000 students – including a mixed sixth-form group.

One parent, who asked to remain anonymous, says an “indecent image” was shared via email.

The school declined to comment on the nature of the attack.

A letter was issued by head teacher Richard Booth on Friday (November 24), however, which said: “The school recently fell victim to a cyber attack that compromised an email distribution group within our system.

“We have disabled all students' email accounts and they will remain closed over the weekend until further notice, including access to any online folders students may use, whilst our network team continue to work to secure our systems.

“As part of this, all external traffic to any school account is being checked whilst we resolve the situation.”

Police have been informed of the incident and the grammar school is working with them to find the individuals responsible.

They also say they are “confident at this stage” that the attack does not involve a breach of personal data.

“Any students that have been affected by this should speak to their Form Tutors or Head of Year or go to Student Services.”

“Thank you to students for acting responsibly and alerting staff to the incident as well as sharing information,” the letter continued.

“Any students that have been affected by this should speak to their Form Tutors or Head of Year or go to Student Services.

“We appreciate that this may also affect students meeting work deadlines and we will of course be understanding in this matter.”

Police and the Weald of Kent Grammar School have been approached for more information.
