Jail threat to mum Bethany Ivell after assaulting petrol station cashier

00:01, 23 October 2017

A young mum who avoided prison for her part in a bungled armed robbery now faces the prospect of jail, after assaulting a petrol station cashier and two police officers.

Bethany Ivell was a passenger in a getaway car when her then-boyfriend Jack Hennessy and three others raided a jewellers in Ramsgate, threatening staff and customers with a machete, back in 2013.

Last January, the 24-year-old, of Pollyfield Close in Snodland, was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment suspended for two years – eight months for the attempted robbery and a further eight months for attacking her cousin, Helena Ivell, using a beer can as a weapon.

A judge said he was only persuaded not to remand Ivell in custody because of her two children, aged five and three at the time.

But now she has admitted four further offences and was told she had breached the conditions of the court order, meaning the prison term may be activated.

At Maidstone Magistrates’ Court she admitted damaging shelving and a till at a Marks and Spencer petrol station in Holborough Road, Snodland, and striking the cashier, on September 11.

Keith Middleton, for Ivell, said the assault was reckless rather than deliberate, and that Ivell had thrown a can of drink which rebounded off the till and hit the member of staff.

On the same day, she assaulted a police officer at her home and another while in custody at Tonbridge Police Station.

Ivell will be sentenced for the four offences at Maidstone Crown Court, when a judge will decide whether to activate the suspended prison sentence in relation to the assault and attempted robbery. The date has not yet been set.

Ivell was a passenger in a getaway car after her boyfriend and three others attempted to rob Cuttings Jewellers in Ramsgate in 2013.

Armed with a machete, Christopher Storey burst in with Jack Hennessy and Keith Hodgson, but they fled empty-handed when staff activated security measures.

Hennessy, 29, of Pollyfield Close, Snodland, was jailed for eight years for his part in the attempted robbery and six other raids on betting shops and a post office.

Hodgson, 34, of Holborough Road, Snodland, was jailed for six years and eight months for five raids.

Storey, 32, of Nixon Avenue, Ramsgate, was sentenced to two years and getaway driver Stacey Cooper, 31, of London Road, Dover, to an eight-month suspended sentence.
