Kent County Council makes plans for 20mph zones to reduce speeding in Rusthall and Larkfield

Plans are in place for areas of two towns to be designated as blanket 20mph speed limit zones.
Kent County Council (KCC) has sought feedback from the public on the two schemes which would see a tightening of speed restrictions in parts of Rusthall and in Larkfield.
The proposals for Larkfield would see more than 80 streets become subject to a 20mph limit, either in full or in part, and in Rusthall more than 40 would be affected.
In recent years there have been increasing demands from road safety campaigners to speeding to be targeted, and as a result KCC is looking to increase the number of 20mph schemes across the county.
The council is determined to reduce the danger of Kent's roads, and recently announced its intention to pursue a goal of zero road deaths on our roads by 2050.
New, reduced-speed zones - some on a trial basis - have already been implemented or planned for towns including Tonbridge, Ashford and Faversham.
However, KCC is proving reluctant to introduce guidelines which would automatically require 20mph limits on all new-build housing developments.
Campaigners have urged the authority to make this blanket rule during a review of its Kent Design Guide, which sets out how roads should be designed and constructed.
But instead it appears happy for new projects to simply be designed for slower traffic, rather than subject to legal limits which would require police enforcement.
