A 67-year-old man hit by a train in West Malling was from the local area, police have confirmed.

The casualty was struck by a Southeastern service just after 3.30pm, yesterday.

British Transport Police said the fatality is not being treated as suspicious.

The man's family has been informed and the death is now in the care of the Mid Kent and Medway coroner.

Eight police cars and one ambulance were seen parked outside the Swan Street station soon after the tragedy.

The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance landed in the car park and left just before 4.30pm.

It's understood the man was struck by the London-bound train.

Services in both directions were suspended on the Maidstone East line while emergency services remained at the scene. A replacement bus service was put in place.

One of the two trains resumed service just after 5.10pm. Both sides of the track had reopened by 6pm.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "We were called to West Malling rail station at 3.33pm on Sunday, 17 May, following a report that a person had been struck by a train.

“Colleagues from Kent Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service also attended. A 67-year-old man, from the local area, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is currently not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner. The man’s family has been informed.”
