Leybourne RSPCA looks for foster homes for pregnant guinea pigs and babies

18:30, 20 November 2023

The RSPCA could soon be looking after hundreds of new arrivals, after rescuing 30 pregnant guinea pigs.

They were picked up alongside another 30 males that had been staying in a private boarding facility after they’d been removed from a property in an unknown location.

Workers Sarah and Claire from the Leybourne-based charity went on a nine-hour round trip to pick up the pets and arrived back in Kent with a van packed full of heavily pregnant piggies.

They then set to work settling them in for the night with plenty of fresh greens and hay.

A spokesman for the RSPCA said: “The next morning the team was surprised to be greeted with some tiny newborn mouths to feed.

“Over the days that followed several more litters of guinea pig babies appeared.

“With many babies expected over the coming weeks we are urgently seeking foster careers who preferably have suitable accommodation to take on a few piggies while they birth and wean their babies, however we are able to supply a limited number of cages to those who don’t already have accommodation and would like to help.”

Litter sizes can range from two to eight pups.

Because the guinea pigs were originally kept inside, the RSPCA is seeking indoor homes due to the current cold weather.

If you think you would like to offer some piggies a foster home apply here.

To help in another way the RSPCA Leybourne is welcoming veg donations for the hungry guinea pigs.
