A lorry driver was caught by police using his phone to chat to family members while driving along the M20 during rush hour.

The incident, which took place on the London-bound stretch of the motorway, near West Malling, happened this morning at about 8.30am.

Police say the 65-year-old man had been using his phone while driving to talk to a relative.

The driver, from Berkshire, was stopped at the scene, "warned about the dangers of his actions" and reported for the offence.

The incident was tweeted about by the Kent Police Roads Unit this morning.

They said the driver would be "likely to receive six points" and a fine.

Some on Twitter thought the punishment should be stronger.

One user said: "Likely to receive?! Driver should have licence removed for 1 year minimum and a heavy fine. This is the only way that this will stop this behaviour."

A Kent Police spokesperson told KentOnline: "Officers from Kent Police’s Roads Policing Unit stopped a lorry near Junction 4 (West Malling) of the M20 London-bound after they spotted the driver using a mobile phone at the wheel.

"The man was warned about the dangers of his actions and reported for the offence."

According to gov.uk, it is illegal to hold and use a phone, sat nav, tablet, or any device that can send or receive data, while driving.

There are some exceptions, including calling 999 for an emergency or if you are safely parked.

You are also allowed to make a contactless payment in a vehicle that is not moving, for example at a drive-thru restaurant

You can use devices with hands-free access, as long as you do not hold them at any time during usage.

Drivers can receive six penalty points and a £200 fine if found to be holding and using a phone.
