Early work to transform the M20 into a smart motorway gets underway tonight.

Highways England is spending £92million to add an extra lane of traffic and make safety improvements between Borough Green and Aylesford.

But before construction begins, trees and bushes are being cleared over the next six nights.

Lanes one and two will be closed east and westbound between junction three, for the M26 and five, for Aylesford, between 8pm and 6am from Monday up to and including Saturday.

Construction work will begin on March 2

Once complete, the new stretch of smart motorway will offer four permanent running lanes, replacing the current hard shoulder.

Five new emergency refuge areas, emergency roadside telephones and CCTV cameras will all be installed.

The deck of Teapot Lane Footbridge will also be replaced.

Work will be complete by January 2020.
