A man has told of the traumatic moment he heard a baby fall from the fourth floor of a block of flats.

The air ambulance landed on Rainham Recreation Ground just before 2pm on Sunday after reports a young boy had fallen from a window in nearby Station Road.

The child, who is believed by witnesses to be around 12-months old, was taken to a London hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

It happened outside All Star Quality dog groomers, where one man, who wants to remain anonymous, was chatting to a friend when he heard the tot hit the floor.

He said: "I heard a loud thud behind me and turned round to see this baby laying motionless on the floor.

"It was a shock to see and we began shouting up the flats trying to get the parents' attention. The father popped his head out the window and went into a sheer panic and ran downstairs."

The witness revealed he was at the scene the whole time – which was around two hours – while police and paramedics arrived before taking the child away, who had begun to move.

"I'll never forgot that sound, it was horrible..."

"There was loads of police and people in the street watching," he added. "Everyone was so distressed and there was a lot of screaming, especially from the family.

Another person who lived nearby told KentOnline: "I saw was the air ambulance fly over, it circled a few times before landing in the park.

"I was curious of what was going on and did take a walk down – police had taped off the rail crossing, then there was more police tape all round by the flats.

"All I saw was about seven police cars, three ambulances and the air ambulance.

"I could hear a lot of people shouting and a woman in distress screaming what sounded like 'my baby' but couldn't really make out who was who as crowds gathered and police were telling them to leave the scene

."

It is the second time a child has fallen from a window in the same block of flats.

This afternoon, police spokesman James Walker said: "We were called at 1.23pm yesterday to a report a child had fallen from a window.

"They remain at the hospital in a stable condition and inquiries to establish the full circumstances are ongoing.

"Anyone who believes they have information that can assist officers can call Kent Police on 01634 792209 quoting 25-0698."

In August 2014, an infant suffered major injuries when she fell from a window, hitting a pedestrian and landing on the pavement.
