Music fans have been left disappointed after a blues, rock and soul concert – the first gig of its kind in Medway - has been cancelled,

The Lazy Sunday Afternoon gig at Chatham Waterfront was due to take place on Sunday.

The 80s blues band Nine Below Zero were due to be headlining, joined by The Brothers Grimm – Medway’s answer to the Blues Brothers - and supported by The Substitutes and Ol’ Pal’s Act.

The free gig, organised by Medway Council, was due to run from 1pm to 10pm as part of the Medway Festival of Music.

But organisers announced yesterday that the venue is not ready and the gig has been called off.

Events manager Carl Madjitey had previously said: “The Blues, Rock and Soul Lazy Sunday Afternoon is new for this year and will become the inaugural event of the Medway Festival of Music which we are developing and moving forward with.

"Next year we really want to go big with the festival and we have lots of gigs, workshops and concerts in the pipeline for all music tastes running throughout the summer.”

Cllr Howard Doe, who is in charge of community services, had said Chatham waterfront would be "a hive if activity".

A spokesman for Medway Council said yesterday: "The Blues, Rock and Soul event scheduled for Sunday, July 27, at Chatham Waterfront has sadly had to be cancelled as the venue cannot not be ready in time.

"We will however be working to put on another event like this in the future. We want to continue to provide people in Medway with fun outdoor events for the whole family to enjoy, showcasing local talent and welcoming acts from further afield."

The Festival of Music includes the Castle Concerts, Under Siege and new for this year, Classical Under Siege.
