An unexploded bomb has been found in a graveyard.
Police were called to Bredhurst village just before 1.30pm this afternoon to a report that some sort of device had been found in the grounds of St Peter's church in Hurstwood Road.
Volunteers who were making improvements to the grounds found the object, which has since been identified as a Second World War bomb, while digging a trench for a hedge.
Vicar Graham Lewis said: "We realised what it was and dialled 101 to get the advice of the police. Officers then turned up and cordoned off the area. They called in the bomb disposal squad from Folkestone."
While the volunteers waited two hours for the explosive specialists to arrive, they moved to the other side of the church yard and continued with their work.
The nearby school was not evacuated and no homes were affected.
Mr Lewis added: "The bomb disposal team took the bomb away to dispose of it later.
"We have been told it is a Second World War mortar bomb. The mystery is how it got there. The experts said if there is one, there is probably more. It is the last thing you need in a church yard."
