An MP has got Boris Johnson to commit to ensuring the so-called 'Boris Island' will not be brought back to life.

Kelly Tolhurst, MP for Rochester and Strood, took the leadership candidate to task about the idea for a new airport in the Thames Estuary could be rekindled should he become Prime Minister.

The Conservative heavyweight earmarked the Hoo Peninsula as a prospective location for the venture during his time as London Mayor.

She joined forces with James Duddridge, MP for Rochford and Southend to oppose the plans.

The Hoo Peninsula covers Ms Tolhurst's Rochester and Strood constituency.

An airport off the Kent coast has been mooted for years with other possible sites off the coast of Sheppey, and the Isle of Grain discussed.

The office of the Small Business Minister revealed that Mr Johnson had gave his commitment that he would not be pursuing the idea any further.

She said: "We have fought for years against the threat of an airport which would destroy our constituency, the lives of people living here and the exceptional habitat and wildlife which is of national and international significance on the peninsula.

"I welcome his commitment, and hope that this will finally lift the blight felt by residents, from the threat which has hung over us for years."

A spokesman for Mr Johnson said: "Plans for a Thames Estuary Airport are off the agenda".

During the meeting, Ms Tolhurst also spoke about the development of Rochester Airport, which Medway Council hopes to turn into an Innovation Park, due to be completed by March 2021.

Mr Johnson added: "I support Kelly's popular local campaign to bring jobs and prosperity to her constituency by getting an all-weather runway at Rochester Airport."
