Popular referee Ian John-Lewis has urged promoters to bring boxing back to the Medway Towns on a regular basis.

John-Lewis (pictured) believes Medway can host more shows as there would be sufficient interest.

He said: "We have a great boxing fan base in Medway. They love their boxing and when we used to box here, it was always a good crowd.

"That’s why I’m surprised that promoters don’t bring pro boxing down this way.

"Boxing is big in the Medway Towns and we have a lovely venue in Medway Park."

John-Lewis is backing Frank Maloney’s plans to bring Sam Webb’s British light middleweight title fight in May to Gillingham.

"That’s fantastic news," he said. "When I heard that I thought ‘well done Frank Maloney’. Sam Webb is a good fighter, add Tom Dallas to the bill and a few other Kent boxers and we will get a good crowd again.

John-Lewis refereed four of the fights last Friday, including Dallas’ win over Gabor Farkas.

It brought back many happy memories as John-Lewis boxed three times at the then Black Lion venue between 1988 and 1990 during his 20-fight welterweight career.
