Schoolboy Lewis Brooke is undergoing gruelling medical treatment as he battles leukaemia.

Since being diagnosed with the illness two years ago, 10-year-old Lewis has spent much of his time in hospital having chemotherapy.

But despite being in constant pain and feeling weak and tired, he is determined to start his own charity to help other poorly youngsters.

He is currently trying to raise the £5,000 needed to get Help Lewis Help Others up and running.

Kind-hearted Lewis, who lives in Gillingham, used the proceeds of a charity Halloween party to buy presents which he handed out in the children’s ward of Medway Maritime Hospital on Christmas Day.

Mum Debbie, 29, said: "He had spent the previous Christmas in hospital so knew what it was like.

"Lewis knows what it's like to receive and he thought it would be nice to give something back" - Lewis's mum, Debbie

"He loved seeing the smiles on faces and immediately asked if he could do it again.

"He decided that to do it properly on a regular basis the best idea would be to start his own charity.

"Lewis knows what it's like to receive and he thought it would be nice to give something back."

Lewis, who goes to Balfour Junior School in Chatham, would like his charity to pay for days out, mini breaks and treats for sick children.

Debbie and husband Tom, 36, said they are "incredibly proud" of their brave son.

Debbie, who also has an 11-month-old son Bobby, said: "I keep asking him if he is sure that he wants to go through with this but he is absolutely sure.

"He is being taught at home at the moment because he is too ill to go to school. He's on morphine and sometimes struggles to walk because of pain in his joints. He used to be so sporty and loved his football. To think he is taking this on is amazing."
