We’ve nowhere to play: brass band needs a (big) new home in the Medway Towns

00:01, 16 April 2016

A brass band which has been running for almost 90 years is in need of a new home.

The Medway Towns Band rehearses at Napier Primary School in Gillingham but with 50 members, large instruments, uniforms and music, they take up a lot of room.

The school now needs the space back so the search is on for somewhere else the band can prepare for its performances.

Manager Richard Parsons said: “We have been using the school stage for a number of years but the school needs its stage back, so it is time to start looking for somewhere else. The school has been fantastic to us but we need to find somewhere we can call our own.”

The organisation actually consists of two bands; the Medway Band, currently ranked the best brass band in Kent who compete in the top league of brass banding, they are ranked 180 in the world, and the Medway Concert Brass, inaugurated in 1988, which has a more relaxed approach.

Until recently, the organisation was sponsored by the KM Media Group.

Members rehearse on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and when they have an upcoming competition they meet more often to practice.

Mr Parsons said: “We need somewhere with flexibility so we can do more rehearsals if needed. Our other requirements are that it must be in Medway, we have been here since 1928 and we do not want to move elsewhere, it’s got to have good acoustics and we need plenty of space.

We need plenty of storage for our instruments, we have some very big pieces of kit, as well as uniforms and 90 years of music.”

The band is looking for a church, school or community centre.

Mr Parsons added: “If we moved into a church we have said we are more than happy to do free gigs to help with fundraising.”
