People living on the Hoo Peninsula are complaining about dirty water coming out of their taps.

The problems started yesterday and residents believe they could be linked to a burst water main in High Halstow.

The leak caused some homes to be left without water, while others were experiencing low pressure.

Today, people in Hoo, Chattenden, Wainscott and Grain have reported discolouration of their water.

Some people said their water is cloudy white, while others are saying theirs is coming out of the taps brown.

Katy Wickenden posted online: “I’ve just filled out pool and the water looks rusty. Filled a pint from the kitchen and is the same also.”

Carol Blake posted this picture of her water online.

Southern Water have advised people in the area that the water is safe to drink.

A statement on their website said: “Sometimes water can appear discoloured. This is normally the result of air bubbles which can collect in the supply after repairs or maintenance of the pipe network.

“If you leave the water in a glass, you will start to see it clearing from the bottom up. Water may also splutter from the tap after maintenance work has left trapped air behind. Run your tap for a minute or two and this should stop.

“If the problem persists, contact us on 0330 303 0368 for more advice.”

A spokesman for Southern Water said: "Some customers in Rochester experienced loss of water on Monday."

"Our crews were able to restore supply within an hour and a half. However, some customers may still be experiencing water discolouration. This is normally the result of air bubbles which can collect in the supply after repairs or maintenance of the pipe network.
