Police officer spat at and woman attacked by Chatham man

A bully attacked a woman and spat at a police officer during a violent outrage after spending a day drinking alcohol.
Christopher Spooner, from Chatham , has now been jailed after grabbing the woman by the neck and spitting into the face of the officer.
Police were called to a disturbance at the property on May 6 after Spooner – who was already serving a suspended sentence for offences against the victim and damaging her property – turned aggressive once again.
He threw her tablet computer out of the window and grabbed her twice after becoming abusive towards the victim.
She fled the property and was helped by a passing motorist who had stopped to assist.
Another witness saw Spooner grab the woman's arm and called police.
The 39-year-old was described as being in a "highly agitated" state when police arrived and officers tried to restrain him.
"The abuse he subjected the victim to was intolerable..."
But he continued his tirade of abuse towards the victim and unprovoked spat at an officer.
He apologised to the officer while in custody and later admitted his abusive behaviour towards the victim.
Spooner, of Chatham Hill, Chatham, was jailed for 14 months on Wednesday, September 9 after pleading guilty at Maidstone Crown Court.
His conviction meant a suspended sentence against him was activated.
Investigating officer PC Heather Walkden said: "Spooner has proven himself to be a bully who is willing to use violence and verbal threats.
"The abuse he subjected the victim to was intolerable and I am pleased that the sentence imposed prevents him from causing further harm.
"Without any provocation, he also spat into the face of one of our officers.
"Such behaviour is disgusting and thoroughly degrading and despite Spooner’s appalling actions, the patrols responded with incredible professionalism."
