A burglar who used manhole covers to break into businesses has been jailed for three years.

Dale Pearson targeted 10 businesses across Rochester, Sheerness and Canterbury and gained entry using nearby manhole covers or by smashing windows in the middle of the night.

These six burglaries and four attempted burglaries were committed at restaurants, newsagents and hairdressers between Thursday, March 5 and Friday, March 20.

Once inside, Pearson stole various items including mobile phones, cash, food, cigarettes and a charity box.

The 25-year-old, of Bill Street Road, Rochester, was arrested after officers were alerted to five separate break-ins in Sheerness town centre and found him nearby, carrying stolen goods in a plastic bag.

Pearson appeared at Maidstone Crown Court yesterday, where he pleaded guilty to eight charges and was sentenced to three years in prison.

Detective Constable Nicola Emery said: "Pearson is a prolific burglar causing disruption and damage to many businesses across Kent.

"I am glad this man has been suitably punished with a significant prison sentence."
