Officers were joined by ambulance crews and the victim was taken to hospital in the capital.

A suspect was later arrested in connection with the incident and taken into custody.

The road was closed in both directions near St Matthew's Church while while officers carried out enquiries, but reopened at around midday.

A resident told KentOnline she was leaving the area on her way to the airport around 2.20am.

She said: "I couldn’t pass Borstal Street towards Rochester because the road was shut off just past the church.

"A police car was straddling the road and there was a cordon by the homes on the right-hand side.

"It looked serious as there was an officer guarding the scene from the road as well as the patrol car in the road."

She added it looked like something was happening in an alleyway which leads to Sidney Road.

Forensics officers arrived at the scene this morning and starting inspecting the area where the incident took place.

It is understood the man's injuries are not life threatening.

Officers investigating the incident are asking anyone who saw what happened, or was at the scene when police arrived to get in contact.
