Chatham couple say car shot at on A2 near Wilmington

00:01, 10 May 2017

A Chatham couple were left covered in shards of glass after their car was allegedly shot at on the A2.

Kuljit Dhesi and his wife Luckie, who is four months pregnant, were driving along the London bound carriageway when the driver’s side window shattered.

Mr Dhesi, 42, said: “All of a sudden the window just exploded with a huge loud bang and glass showered all over me, my wife and filled the car.

“We were both shocked. There were no other cars around us or on the opposite carriageway so there was no reason for anything to come up from the road.

"I think someone must have fired at us from the woods or the houses on the other side of the road.”

The couple were on their way to Mr Dhesi’s mother’s house in Bexleyheath to celebrate his birthday.

When he got to the town, he flagged down a police car and said the officers told him they would go and investigate.

Mr Dhesi also went to the police station to report the incident, which happened just before the Wilmington turn off around 4.15pm on Friday, April 28.

He said: “The gentleman behind the desk said they weren’t interested and that they would never find out what actually happened. I lost a lot of confidence that day with the police.

“I demanded he filed it so they had a record in case something similar happened again.”

He said: “I thought it was best to inform the media as well as other people might have the same issue in the same area.

“It’s a busy part of the motorway and it could have been much worse.”

Mr Dhesi said he had not found any evidence of what caused the window to shatter.

A Met Police spokesman said: “We are committed to dealing with all reports of crime with the utmost professionalism.

"We would invite the victim to re-contact Bexleyheath Police Station where the matter will be reviewed.

“The matter was reported to the Met and appears to have taken place in Kent. The crime report has been transferred to Kent Police.”

Police in Kent confirmed they received a report that a car was damaged while it was being driven on the A2 London-bound, near Wilmington.

A spokesman said: "Officers have assessed the circumstances and, at present, no evidence of any criminal offences have been identified."
