Police are hunting a thief who stole an envelope containing cash from the back of a shop in Rochester High Street.

The incident happened on yesterday morning at Austen’s of Rochester after a manageress spotted a man in the preparation area at he back of the shop allegedly take the envelope.

Staff at the shop, which sells fruit and vegetables, meat, cheeses, free range eggs, juices, and more, later posted CCTV footage of a man seen walking past the shop on social networking site Facebook appealing for information.

The post read: “This morning an envelope was stolen from the prep area at the back of our shop. It contained cash and card takings we were about to bank.

“Our manageress saw this man go behind the prep area and as he turned round had the envelope in his hand and put it into the front pocket of his top.

“On confronting him he became aggressive and refused to admit taking it even though he was clearly seen with it in his hand.

“We have identified him from CCTV footage from a camera in a neighbouring shop and the police are involved and hoping to trace him up the high street on other cameras.”

“However if you think you recognise him please could you let us know and we’ll pass the info on to the police.

“Our member of staff was shaken up by the experience and we urge other traders to be wary.”

Police say they are investigating the incident and were informed about the theft at 9.48am on Tuesday.

A spokesman added: “No arrests have been made and inquires are ongoing.
