Five years after being given only 18 months to live a dad-of-four has won a volunteering award.
Ty Hemblade was told of the terminal diagnosis after his kidney cancer spread.
Despite the news, the 50-year-old has defied medical expectations and has been undergoing drug treatments.
These have enabled him to continue to live an active life.
About a year ago, he decided to help others and started volunteering at Gillingham’s Cancer Research UK shop.
He wanted to help people affected by the disease and his dedication to the cause has earned him the title of Shop Volunteer of the Year.
He received the honour at the charity’s Flame of Hope 2017 Awards in London.
The former builder was nominated by staff at his branch.
The audience heard despite his terminal diagnosis, his witty charm and banter continually lifted the spirits of volunteers and customers.
The Chatham resident also played a crucial part in the shop’s successful Stand Up To Cancer campaign last year when staff smashed their £1,500 fundraising target.
The award was one of a number handed out in recognition of those who make outstanding contributions to Cancer Research UK.
'I have been making the most of life, doing all the things that I would otherwise have put off' - Ty Hemblade
Mr Hemblade said: “It was a case of shock and awe really.
“I had no idea what a big deal these awards were and I was so honoured to be a part of it.
“I have been making the most of life, doing all the things that I would otherwise have put off, like spending holidays and days out with the family.
“I also wanted to do something for the charity to keep me busy too.
“People have been surprised at how much I enjoy the work as it is so different to being a builder, but I love it.
“The staff there are great.
“The work means something to me and I have a focus and a routine. It’s better than sitting around and feeling sorry for yourself.”
