Chairman Jeff Talbot says Chatham’s inclusion in Ryman League, Division 1 North next season could force the club to fold.

The Chats had hoped to be moved to Division 1 South by the FA’s Leagues Committee so they could take on rivals including Sittingbourne, Maidstone, Whitstable, Faversham, Herne Bay, Folkestone, Hythe and Ramsgate.

Instead, they are facing a third year in a division which is predominantly made up of teams in Essex and Mr Talbot said the decision could kill his club.

He said: "It’s disappointing again. We might fold over this in the long run, it is quite possible.

"If we don’t get the sponsorship we need to fill the gap between the gate receipts we would get in the South and the ones we do get in the North, then it’s a real possibility.

"The situation is dire. This is not being dramatic, it’s very real. Another season in the North could be the deal-breaker. It is that serious. That’s reality."

The Ryman League moved Chatham to the North for geographical reasons, despite south London-based Dulwich being kept in Division 1 South.

Mr Talbot (pictured) said: "What I want to know is whether the decision is based on the team closest to the north in terms of road distance, as a crow flies, travel time or cost? That information is not available but surely someone has to know?

"We are working on answering all of those questions, preparing our case and intend to hand it over to the league before their formal meeting to vote on the constitution in two weeks.

"If we are top of all those lists, then fair enough. All we want is a reasonable, logical explanation that could apply to any club but just happens to affect us.

"As long as there is a sound rationale behind the decision, then you have to be realistic. Of course, you’re not happy but you accept it. If not, then I’d like to know why us?"

Mr Talbot also suggested: "Even if we are the closest, what about sharing the pain around a little? It’s obvious that there’s not much in it.

"It might be fairer to rotate among the closest teams so they only get one year of lower gates in the North and then three or four better ones in the South."
