Chatham boss Kevin Watson is closing in on a new striker in a bid to improve the club’s poor goalscoring record.

Watson, pictured, won’t reveal the player’s identity but things are at an advanced stage, and he hopes the paperwork will be completed ahead of the Ryman League, Division 1 North trip to Ware on Saturday.

Player-boss Watson said: "We have already got Alwayne Jones on a dual registration from Tonbridge but are close to signing another attacking player."

Watson has allowed Jon Pilbeam to return to former club Tunbridge Wells to give him much-needed game time, while Brad Potter and defender Chris Hill are recovering from knee and neck injuries.

Matt Newman misses the Ware game because of suspension.

Chatham have failed to score in their last three league games and the match pairs the two teams boasting the worst form in the league.

Watson still maintains his side are playing better than results suggest but admitted: "The game at Ware is a big one for us and we need to get back on it after three successive defeats."
