A man has been arrested after reports a child was assaulted.
It allegedly happened in Chatham High Street and a photo taken shortly afterwards has been widely shared on social media.
KentOnline has chosen not to use the picture.
In a Facebook post, a woman said: "This disgusting “man” has just smacked a child in the face in front of the whole of Chatham high street all because the baby was crying and no one but me had the guts to say something to him.
"Two minutes later a woman picks the baby up and tried shoving the babies hat further down his face because the baby had a huge red mark.
"I’d dread to think what he does to the poor little boy when he’s crying at home."
A police spokesman said: "A 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and the investigation is ongoing."
