A cricket club is down to its last innings of a fundraising campaign to build a new pavilion which will be used by the whole community.
Rainham Cricket Club, based at Berengrove Park, has raised £65,000 and needs just £15,000 more.
The club, believed to be the oldest surviving sports club in Medway, has secured a grant from Sport England and have also had a grant agreed in principle from the English Cricket Board.
Club members are now giving their fundraising efforts one last push to raise the rest of the money.
It is hoped building work will start in October and the new pavilion will be complete by March next year.
On Sunday a family fun day is being held at the ground in Berengrave Lane. Members, along with family and friends, will be setting off on a sponsored 5k run at 11am – with some dressed in full cricket gear.
It will be followed by colt games and matches featuring former players. The club is also running a raffle - with a top prize of £1,000 cash. The winners will be drawn on September 10.
Committee member Neil McCue said: “In November last year we had raised £8,000 for the appeal, the total now stands at £65,000.
“This has been raised though donations, corporate fundraising and our own events.
“Our recent beer festival raised £10,000 – it far exceeded our expectations. We are now looking to raise as much as we can from these last two events and hope the community get behind us and sponsor us for the run.”
The new pavilion will replace the current clubhouse, which is more than 40 years old, and will include changing rooms, a function room and kitchen.
The car parking has been increased to handle larger numbers attending the ground and the new building will be wheelchair friendly.
The aim is to encourage families to attend games and to attract new members, particularly younger players, to help secure the club’s future.
The ground is used by community groups and it is hoped more will use the new facilities.
