Medway Council would welcome a LGBT+ pride event but says it has not got the money to organise one itself.
Crowds gather to celebrate the culture of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other groups at pride events, which are held across the world.
Alan Wells, press secretary for the Medway Lib Dems, said an annual celebration similar to those held elsewhere in the county should be held in the Towns.
He said: “A pride event held annually in Medway would be an example of our Towns at their best, coming together as one to celebrate the contribution of the LGBT+ community in the Towns.
“Planning for a pride event should be transparent and inclusive of all communities and venues in the Medway Towns that support the LGBT+ community.
“Supporting pride in Medway promotes diversity for the Medway Towns and states clearly whatever your sexual orientation or gender, Medway is open and welcomes you.”
Mr Wells was due to ask about the matter at last week’s full council meeting, but was not present to deliver his question. The prepared answer was published on Thursday (October 17).
Cllr Howard Doe (Con), deputy leader at Medway Council, highlighted a series of events organised by external organisations which have benefited from support from the authority.
He added: “Through the Medway Safety Advisory Group advice and direction can be provided to ensure that support is given to any organisation wishing to run events, to do safely and within the prescribed legislation.
“Support will continue to be given to such organisations, although it should be borne in mind that there is currently no provision within any existing budgets for any costs that would be incurred in hosting such an event.
“We agree that planning for a pride event should be transparent and inclusive, and would look to the organiser to be so.”
