A convict is on the run after escaping from the dock in a desperate bid to avoid being sent to prison.

Adam Savage forced open the door and raced out of the court room at Medway Magistrates' Court.

He was due to be sentenced for breaching a suspended sentence order and was about to be sent back to prison for 45 days by magistrates.

As he was being told his fate, he broke loose from the officers, bashed through the door and bolted for the exit.

A source said Savage, whose address according to court documents is Meadow Bank Road, Chatham, was being brought into the court from the cells escorted by two officers, who remained in the dock with the defendant at the time.

It is understood the security guards chased after Savage through the court but the 34-year-old was too fast and managed to flee the building.

Police officers were called and carried out a search after the incident, which took place last Wednesday, August 28, at about 11.30am.

"Officers attended and carried out a thorough search of the local area but the man was not located" - police spokesman Steve Knight

Police spokesman Steve Knight said: "Officers attended and carried out a thorough search of the local area but the man was not located. Inquiries into his whereabouts are ongoing."

Court papers show Savage was being sentenced after failing to comply with a supervision order relating to a previous conviction.

The documents state he had not turned up for five appointments in July arranged by the probation service.

Private company GEOAmey, which is contracted by the Ministry of Justice, provides security at the court.
