Trading Standards officers in Medway have removed hats from sale which they believe could be potentially fatal for children.

The colourful hats feature animals and cartoons and lock under the chin – but under pressure, the buckle does not release.

The hat could then act as a noose if a child became trapped as they would tighten around the neck should they get caught on a fence or play equipment.

Last Christmas, officers from Medway Council’s Trading Standards seized some of the headwear but they have now resurfaced.

After they carried out early checks on Christmas stock this year, officers found ten of the bonnet-style hats from a shop in Chatham - which has not been named - and they were immediately removed from sale.

Officer Simon Ellis said: “These hats are specifically aimed at children and can look like they would make a fun stocking filler this Christmas.

“But they pose a real danger and effectively become a noose around the neck of the child wearing it if they become trapped.

“We continue to monitor the safety of goods but I also urge parents to look for properly marked safe children’s items this Christmas.

“Anyone with any doubts should contact Trading Standards immediately.”

The hats violate legal safety standards and are usually made in China.
