Casino Rooms in Rochester works to improve access for disabled visitors

A wrestling fan has started a petition for better disabled access after being told he couldn’t see one of his favourite shows.
Until recently Ross Briffitt has been able to enjoy performances at The Casino Rooms, Rochester.
The 30-year-old was born with spina bifida and is wheelchair-bound.
The wrestling shows are usually held upstairs and he has been along to enjoy quite a few.
Up until now, the doormen have helped carry him upstairs.
But he was recently told health and safety concerns meant they cannot do this any more.
The popular nightclub doesn’t have a lift so he is unable to go to any up-and-coming wrestling shows.
He felt this was unfair so started an online petition to try and get improved access.
"I just want the ability to enjoy a night out without problems" - Ross Briffitt
The Gillingham resident said: “I just want to be able to get into see a show but can’t get up the stairs without a lift.
“I did go to the last show but it was a big drama getting me up the stairs, I don’t want to be in that position again.
“I just want the ability to enjoy a night out without problems.”
So far more than 100 people have signed the petition which Mr Briffitt hopes to eventually present to Casino owner, Aaron Stone.
Mr Stone says plans and work have already started to improve access for wheelchair users and people should call the venue ahead of a visit to ask for assistance from staff.
He said: “The Casino Rooms has always welcomed wheelchair users.
“Since the positive change in the regulations, we have continued to improve access for chair users wherever possible.
“During our ongoing refurbishment, we have included new facilities and access for wheelchair users through the ground floor and disabled toilet facilities on both floors, taking advice from chair users, our own architects/designers and also Medway Council.
“As we continue to develop the venue, our next area of attention will be the upstairs main room.
“During this process we will be working with our design team to encompass access for all and hopefully overcome the major issues we currently face given that the building is of a very complex structural design and is also within a conservation area.
“Should any wheelchair user require assistance or information, they should call 01634 832888.”
