A dog that savaged a toddler in a Chatham park was a banned breed, police have confirmed.
Tests have revealed the animal, which was shot dead by armed police after the horrific attack in Jenkins Dale on Tuesday evening, was a pit bull-type dog.
The dog is said to have bitten the girl's face before clamping its jaws around her head in front of several horrified children, who reportedly tried to fight it off.
The victim, 18-month-old Victoria Resetnjova, was flown to St George's Hospital in London in a critical condition.
She remains in a London hospital with very serious injuries.
Yesterday, her parents thanked those who ran to the little girl's aid.
They said: "We would like to thank all the emergency services and others who helped our daughter by giving first aid at the scene.
"We are also grateful for the continued support of the hospital where she is being treated. The incident has ruined our lives and the lives of our two children.
"We ask that people now respect our privacy and give us time to focus on the well-being of our family."
Earlier this week, officers arrested Michael Thornton, 26, and an unnamed woman and teenager, all from Chatham, on suspicion of offences under the Dangerous Dogs Act.
Thornton and the woman have since been bailed until Wednesday, April 26. The teenager has been released pending further investigation.
