A young driver has been taken to a London hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries after his car collided almost head-on with another vehicle.

The motorist, who was thought to have been at the wheel of a Vauxhall Corsa, had to be freed from his vehicle by firefighters after the crash in Beechen Bank Road, Walderslade, last night.

A crew from Rochester fire station was called to the road in Chatham at about 7.30pm and used specialist cutting equipment to remove the side of the vehicle to free the man.

Paramedics and police were also sent to the scene, as well as doctors from the Kent Air Ambulance.

The road was closed for several hours while the emergency services dealt with the incident.

Two other people, who were travelling in a people carrier which collided with the Corsa, believed to be a father and daughter, were able to get out of their vehicle before the crews arrived and were tended to by paramedics at the roadside.

Firefighters said they were on the scene for about an hour dealing with the crash site and making the scene safe.

The motorist who was taken to the London hospital is believed to be aged between 20 and 30.

Kent Police spokersman James Walker said: "Kent Police was called to a two car collision in Boxley Road, Walderslade, at 7.27pm on Monday 12 February 2018.

"The South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance also attended and a man was conveyed to a London Hospital.

"His injuries are not reported to be life threatening.

"The collision did block the road however it had reopened by 11.03pm."
