An accident in which a cement mixer ploughed into a row of cars was caused when a driver suffered a medical episode, police have confirmed.

Several people were injured and damaged cars were left strewn about the A228 at Cuxton after the cement mixer collided with seven stationary vehicles at about 1pm on Wednesday, September 2.

This week a statement from Kent Police said: "Following a review of all available evidence, officers are satisfied that the cause of the collision was related to a medical episode and that no criminal offences had taken place.

"The driver of the cement mixer has also surrendered his licence to the DVLA. The HGV licence will be retained for a minimum of a year and the standard driving licence for six months."

Although cars were left badly damaged, there were no serious injuries to drivers or passengers.

The Fleetmix cement mixer, travelling south towards Halling, came to rest in bushes off Rochester Road with a trail of destruction in its wake up the hill.

Witnesses at the time reported seeing up to 10 ambulances at the scene and the air ambulance landed in a nearby school.

The ambulance service confirmed five patients had been taken to hospital but nobody was believed to be seriously injured.

Following the crash, Tim Rogers, nicknamed 'Lucky' by his work colleagues, described how he had escaped serious injury when the cement mixer narrowly missed his van.

The 54-year-old said cars were "flying everywhere" as the cement mixer came straight towards him, adding: “He came across the road. I just saw it coming towards me.

"He hit a couple of cars then went round me and took a couple of cars out behind me. He’s gone through the trees and ended up down there."

Concrete supplier Fleetmix has been approached for a comment.
