Gillingham football fan 'hurled racist abuse at Peterborough player' as Kent Police investigate

An investigation has been launched after a Gillingham fan allegedly chanted racist abuse at a visiting player.

Stewards at Priestfield Stadium were made aware of the allegation during the second half of Gillingham's first team fixture against Peterborough last night.

According to the club, after a preliminary investigation a person was detained and police are conducting a formal investigation.

A spokesman said: "Gillingham Football Club will not tolerate racial abuse and will take whatever action that is appropriate at the conclusion of the investigation with regard to any persons behaving in this fashion at our ground.

"Anyone found guilty will be banned for life from Priestfield Stadium.

"The club is unable to make any further comment."

Kent Police have confirmed a man in his early thirties has been arrested and bailed until the end of October.

Witnesses are asked to contact Kent Police on 101.
