Firefighters are tackling a blaze at the household waste site after a fire started in a compactor.
The recycling centre in Hoath Way, Gillingham, is currently shut and people are being advised to use other sites in Medway.
Two crews, one from Medway station and one from Strood, were called to the site around 1.15pm and are using hose reels and water from a hydrant to put out the flames.
The site allows the public to recycle items such as food cans, plastic, paper, glass, garden waste, scrap metal and cooking oil.
A tweet from Medway Recycling's account said: "Hoath Way HWRC is currently closed due to a fire alternative sites can be found here [on the council website]".
Other centres can be found at Shawstead Road, Capstone and Sundridge Hill, Cuxton.
More as we get it.
