A playful pet got more than he bargained for when he chased his ball through a hole in a fence and fell 30ft into a moat.
Springer spaniel Ledley was out with his owner near the naval war memorial on the Great Lines in Gillingham early on Friday morning when he ran though a hole in a fence backing on to Fort Amherst in Chatham.
The owner, realising the dog must have fallen down the fort’s dry moat, borrowed a mobile phone from a passer-by and called firefighters for help.
Two crews from Medway fire station were called out to rescue Ledley at about 7.30am and used a rescue ladder platform and specialist safe access equipment, to reach the animal.
Watch manager David Read, who was in charge of the rescue, said: “Fortunately for Ledley, firefighters managed to find a safe way to access him during the rescue which took just under an hour an a half.
“Ledley escaped with an injury to his rear hind leg before being reunited with his owner.”
