Plans to turn a former bank into a takeaway are back on the table – with most of the changes already made.

A retrospective application to change the old NatWest, in Main Road, Hoo, into a chicken shop has been submitted to Medway Council.

Applicants Monopoly Property Investments already completed works earlier this month and said "the premises are ready to open for business".

Works to change the use of the building began in 2016 after planning permission was granted subject to conditions.

However, a retrospective application for the same scheme has been submitted after the original planning approvals lapsed and two "prior of commencement of use" conditions were not completed.

The design and access statement said: "This due to a genuine misunderstanding and in the belief that 'prior of commencement of use' did not mean 'prior of commencement of works'."

It added: "The proposed change of use would make use of an existing vacant property in a sustainable location forming part of a central parade of shops."

Chicken Treat, which would sell fried and peri peri chicken, will employ around seven full-time members of staff and be open from noon to 11pm every day, if plans are given the go ahead.

NatWest announced it was shutting its branch in Hoo St Werburgh in 2014 due to a 30% drop in people using it over the past four years.

An online petition to keep it open was launched and many Peninsula residents joined in on the fight to keep it – but it was unsuccessful.

It is not yet known when a decision on the latest application will be made.
