Friends and family of a man who died after an attack near his home undertook a fundraising mission to set up a trust fund for his baby daughter.
Michael Tierney’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief with a growing display of flowers and mementoes at the scene of his alleged murder and a gathering of around 100 people at Victoria Gardens the day after his death.
The community has been now rallying to help his family, including his eight month-old daughter, Joesey.
Those affected by Mr Tierney’s death came together on Saturday to take part in a sponsored walk from Sheerness to Chatham, with about 100 people taking part.
His cousin Anna Cunningham has helped to organise the fundraising drive. She said: “It was such a hot day and it was brilliant, everyone completed it.
“The youngest was his nephew who is seven and even his aunt Bridie, who is 78, completed it. His sisters, brother and mum were also there.”
A family fun day took place on Sunday, including Irish dancing displays, a bouncy castle, barbecue and raffle, at the Waggon at Hale pub in Capstone Road.
Mrs Cunningham, 29, added: “About 300 people came along. Everyone had a good
time and said what a well organised event it was.
“We can’t thank people enough who contributed something towards the day some gave raffle prizes while other donated their time and equipment for free. It was really special for us to see as a family.”
Mr Tierney’s family have met his funeral expenses so all the money raised will be given to his daughter for her future.
Mrs Cunningham said: “Sponsorship money is still coming in so we don’t know how much we have raised yet, but it will all go to Joesey.”
A bank account has been set up for donations. Details of how to donate can be found on the Facebook memorial page, Gone too soon Micky Tierney #R.I.P.
Two men accused of murdering Mr Tierney have been remanded in custody. George French, 39, of Ansell Avenue, Chatham, and William Fleming, 26, of White Road, Chatham, will enter pleas on September 10. A trial date has been set for November 16. Fleming’s girlfriend, Kelly Whicker, 27, of Haig Avenue, has been charged with assisting an offender. She will appear for a preliminary hearing today (Friday).
