Distraught eyewitnesses described how they rushed to help Mr Barton.

One of those who was in the area when the tragedy happened was Patrick Coulter, from Gillingham.

The 18-year-old was with a group of more than a dozen friends and called 999 whilst running towards Mr Barton.

The former Brompton Academy pupil, who said he will never forget the "traumatic event", followed instructions from the operator until ambulance crews arrived.

"All I was focused on was him and whether he was okay," he said.
