A grammar school has scored top marks by Ofsted at its first inspection in 15 years.

The Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School in Rochester has retained its “outstanding” status in all categories.

The Ofsted report singled out the school’s “boldly ambitious” curriculum and the exceptional behaviour of pupils.

Part of the Leigh Academies Trust, inspectors praised the progress made by special education needs and disadvantaged students, ensuring they are not left behind.

Principal Eliot Hodges said: “We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our students who are a privilege to teach and the core to our success.

“We also thank our motivated and hardworking staff for their unwavering dedication to our students’growth and opportunities..”

Mr Hodges also acknowledged the Trust which took over the school in Maidstone Road in January 2019.

The Trust now operates 30 academies in the South Thames Corridor, encompassing 20,000 students between the ages of two and 19. It employs more than 2,900 staff across the region.

The Math School, as it is known, is among the few institutions which has held on to its “outstanding” accreditation under the new more rigorous Ofsted framework.

About 1,450 pupils are on the school roll including a sixth form which admits girls.
