Gran Sue Waters loved her job working in a cafe so much that when the charity running it announced it was closing she decided to take over the business.

Sue, who had been serving at the community hub run by the Gillingham Street Angels for more than a year, has re-launched it as Sue’s Crafty Cafe.

Based in Prospect Place, in Gilingham, Sue uses the residential care home’s kitchen to prepare home-made breakfasts and lunches during the week.

As well as the over 50s residents popping in for a chat and bite to eat, it’s also proving popular with students at the nearby university digs in Blake Road.

Sue, 64, said : “It’s lovely to see different age groups getting on and respecting each other. I really enjoy working here.. It’s not just a cafe it’s a place to socialise. Some people at the home would not venture out if it we weren’t here. It’s a place to come and have a cup of tea.”

The mother-of-four, who invested in some equipment and buys in all her own food, describes her new venture as “a one-man band”. But her eldest daughter Zoey, 38 does pop in to help her out.

Sue, who lives in King William Road, Gillingham with husband Stuart, plans to branch out and hold activities for her customers. She hopes to run craft sessions and mother and baby groups.
