Mr Hirst, 78, was born and raised in Gravesend but had lived in Rainham for the past 20 years.

Following the news he had died, hundreds of people have shared their memories of him.

A statement from his family said: "He would absolutely love seeing how many people's hearts he has touched.

"Garry was loved by all his children, grandchildren and his siblings and extended family and by so many other people within the community.

"He will be so very missed but our memories will live on."

Friend Sally Butchart wrote: "I woke up this morning to the devastating news of my dear close friend, please remember Garry with the happiness and laughter he brought to our town. My heart is numb."

Garry, who was nicknamed The Sheriff, was described as being "full of life" and often showed his many adventures around Medway on his Facebook.

Neighbour Samantha Monk added: "Oh Garry, we have been your neighbours for 11 years now and you’ve bought us so many smiles.

"I will miss your 6am 'it’s a beautiful morning' singing."

Jake Greenwood commented: "The kindest and most joyful bloke you'd ever meet.

"The sheriff loved to have fun, his quirkiness and sense of humour will be missed greatly.

"My fondest memories will always be of the sheriff directing traffic and being a human speed camera on the top road, instructing people to 'mind the gap' on the train and shop karaoke around Tesco. Rest in peace Sheriff."

Garry was a well-known man around Rainham and touched the hearts of many across the town.

Nikki Diddams said: "Won't be the same in Rainham, he always said hello, saw him near my work a couple of weeks ago singing and dancing.

"RIP Garry Hirst aka Sherrif, my thoughts are with your family and friends."
