Hess: We lost our way against Wimbledon

ANDY Hessenthaler admits his Gillingham team rarely looked like winning their home game with Wimbledon after a sluggish display led to a 0-0 draw on Saturday. The point, which extends Gillingham's unbeaten sequence to five matches, does move the club closer to guaranteed First Division survival but Hessenthaler wasn't happy with the performance.

He said: "I thought for 10 minutes in the first half we were the better side, but then we lost our way. I thought there were a few off their game and things were said in the dressing room at half time.

"We had nobody getting in there and they were winning the second balls, and I said at half time that we may need somebody to get out there and win a few tackles and liven people up a bit."

Gillingham improved slightly after the interval but needed to wait until the final moments before creating a clear-cut opportunity. However Marlon King headed wide of the target from only six yards out, much to the frustration of the club manager.

Hessenthaler said: "At the start of the second half we were quite bright but then the game fizzled out until the last 10 minutes when we could have won it. We had the most clear-cut chance at the end of the game and Marlon will be disappointed that he hasn't tucked it away.

"The positive things to come out of it were that we were not beaten, and kept a clean sheet which makes it five games unbeaten. I thought we defended well as a team."
