Hollywood has come to Medway once again as stars arrive to film at the Historic Dockyard, Chatham.

Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep and Helena Bonham Carter appear in Suffragette, a movie about the early days of the women’s suffrage movement.

The film is based on the script written by Abi Morgan and centres on the foot soldiers who were forced underground.

Carey Mulligan plays Maud, a young foot soldier who is radicalised and turns to violence after seeing that peaceful protests achieve nothing.

Meryl Streep is taking on the role of Emmeline Pankhurst, the political activist who founded the Women’s Franchise League.

The day the Muppets came to Medway

Filming started yesterday, but the set has been up for a while.

Amateur photographer Graham Long was visiting the Dockyard last weekend and managed to grab a few snaps of the set before it was closed off to the public.

Mr Long said: “I think it’s so wonderful having our dockyard being used again and big stars coming to town is so exciting, even if I am stuck at work when they film.

"It’s great seeing all the set up and behind the scenes stuff.”

Director, Sarah Gavron won a BAFTA for Best New Director in 2004 for This Little Life, a film about an premature baby.

The project is backed by Pathe, Film4 and the BFI film fund.

But it is only the latest in a long line of shoots at the Chatham tourist attraction.

Downton Abbey, Frankenstein and even the Muppets movie have used the dockyard as the authentic background for filming.
