Three homeless people have had their homes and personal belongings destroyed in a fire.

The blaze broke out at around 12:30pm on Tuesday, August 1 at Gads Hill, Gillingham, where 10 people were camping.

Two tents were burnt to the ground and the remaining were slashed and destroyed.

Neil Charlick from Medway Street Angels claims this is not unusual, and there are an increasing number of attacks on the homeless.

He told the Medway Messenger: “They’ve all had to move because they’re too scared of people going to do stuff to them.

“Luckily no one was there but we are finding more attacks against people and their property.

“If they stay in the doorways in the high street they get people urinating on them and throwing stuff at them.

“We take them off the beaten track and people still come and find them and do this.”

Medway Street Angels help the homeless people in the area by providing support and giving them essentials including food and bedding.

They have replaced the things destroyed in the fire and are appealing for help to replenish their supplies.

Mr Charlick added: “It’s not ideal. We rely on donations and tents don’t get offered very often. I’ve had to go to boot fairs to try and find cheap tents for them.

“People are becoming too scared to leave their things in the tents.

“One man walks around all day with his stuff in a backpack because he doesn’t want to leave it.

“He’s only got a torch, a radio and a sleeping bag but he’s had to walk around the rain with it all.”

Mr Charlick believes it was a group of youngsters who started the fire but this has not been confirmed.
