A dedicated volunteer at The Wisdom Hospice has been recognised with a top award.
Kate Browning has been awarded the Order of Mercy in recognition of her outstanding voluntary efforts over the last 23 years.
She received her medal at an awards ceremony in London after being nominated by members of staff.
The 79-year-old started volunteering as a driver, before helping in the day hospice and most recently she has been leading the spiritual care team, which provides support and comfort for the patients.
She said she was humbled to receive the surprise honour.
She added: “I’m there to listen. I make patients feel welcome and at home. It is such a privilege to be part of the spiritual care team, to simply be there for people, to be available.
“On opening the letter informing me of the award, I felt both amazement and gratitude to be given a medal for doing something that I really enjoy and find so inspiring.
“I have been very lucky to be able to meet so many patients and their families over the years and to listen to their varied and fascinating life experiences, as well as to be available at this very poignant time of their lives.
“This would not have been possible without the unfailing friendship, support and kindness of all the hospice staff and that of my fellow volunteers. The hospice is a very special place of comradeship and care.”
Debra Gaskin, from Medway Community Healthcare, which runs the hospice described Kate as a role model.
She said: “Kate is warm, intuitive, extremely caring and genuinely concerned for those in vulnerable circumstances. She is a highly-valued volunteer at the wisdom hospice.”
The League of Mercy recognises and encourages volunteers who work in many areas of care, such as with the sick, the disabled, the young at risk, the elderly and the dying.
