Hundreds of residents and businesses have been left without power for more than 24 hours.

Engineers are still fighting to restore power to various areas in Gillingham this evening.

UK Power Networks say they were made aware of cuts just before 4pm yesterday and confirmed that specialists were on site by 5.45pm.

But the operator is still struggling to get electricity flowing across two postcodes - ME7 2 and ME7 4.

A total of 241 customers are said to be affected.

UK Power Networks even organised a van that visited the area at 1pm today to supply residents with hot meals.

The organisation said: "Our food vehicle is still outside 181 Franklin Road, and Customer Support Vehicle is parked in the Sikh Temple Car Park for extra support.

"We've had to isolate further supplies in the Livingstone Road area to allow the Gas Board to continue their work.

"Once their work has been completed we are looking to connect a generator in order to restore some power to the area."

As of 7pm, the company said engineers have connected a temporary generator to restore power to 91 customers, after the Gas Board deemed it safe to do so while their work is ongoing.

As of 8.36pm, officials said another temporary generator was on site to restore power to more customers, but they were waiting for the Gas Board to deem it safe to connect.

Residents are advised a food vehicle is located outside 182 Gillingham Road for customers still affected by the fault.
