Soul singer Jaki Graham attends Medway awards show celebrating achievements of black youth

Legendary soul singer Jaki Graham was among those in attendance at a local awards show celebrating black youth.

Medway African and Caribbean Association handed out 25 prizes at its annual award ceremony on Saturday.

The tradition, which is in its 17th year, was held at Kings School in Rochester with more than 100 audience members.

The awards recognise young people who have taken steps to make some positive changes in their lives.

Chairwoman of MACA, Carol Stewart said: “All the winners were very worthy recipients, and the performances were outstanding.

“It was such an amazing evening and would not have happened without the support of Kings School and all the team who worked hard behind the scenes, putting in many voluntary hours to make this happen.”

There were dances and one winner, John Fadare played the grand piano and sang an original song.

There were also performances from special guest and pop singer, Jaki Graham who topped the US charts in the 90s with hit single "Ain’t Nobody”.

She said:It was an amazing night, and you should all be proud, I felt so much love in the room and would love to come back to Medway.”

Community dignitaries, Medway Mayor Cllr Nina Gurung and Medway Council leader, Cllr Vince Maple attended to show their support.

The ceremony was sponsored by venue host, King’s School who were able to raise over £200 on the night for a charity in Tanzania and Kenya.

MACA was also able to raise more than £1000 as well as additional funding received from other grants.

Carol said: “I am very proud of all MACA does and we aim to make these awards bigger and better.”
