An inmate died after an incident at a Kent Prison, it has been confirmed.
The emergency services were called to Rochester Prison on February 10.
The inmate was taken to hospital where he died two days later.
He has been named as Stuart Esson, aged 41.
A Prison Service spokesman said: "HMP Rochester prisoner Stuart Esson died in hospital on January 12.
"The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed.”
The prisoner was taken to hospital on the same day an officer was injured, but the Prison Service say the two incidents were unrelated.
A witness said six ambulances, a critical care team and the air ambulance were called to the prison. There were unconfirmed reports of a riot taking place.
The Prison Service said an officer needed hospital treatment but his injuries were not described as serious. The attack has been referred to the police.
A spokesman said: “A prison officer attended hospital on February 10 as a precaution and reported no serious injuries.
"We do not tolerate attacks on our hardworking staff and the police have been informed.”
