Bikers are being offered free security devices amid a massive increase in motorbike thefts in the county.
The Kent branch of the Motorcycle Action Group is joining forces with Kent Police to raise awareness about keeping their machines safe in a bid to crack down on thieves.
Free locks and chains are being handed this Saturday (August 24) between midday and 4pm in the yellow car park at Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre.
Latest statistics obtained by the group show that that thefts reported to the constabulary virtually doubled from 214 in 2021 to 411 last year.
At 75 thefts, Medway recorded the highest number of scooters, mopeds and motorbikes taken in Kent in 2023.
Folkestone and Hythe had the lowest with six stolen in the year.
The data was provided by Kent Police after MAG submitted a Freedom of Information request.
MAG has been campaigning to increase deterrents and make bikers more aware of security measures for years.
Members have successfully got a grant from the Police Crime Commissioner Matthew Scott's department to install locking bars at four car parks in Medway.
Steve Mallett, MAG’s regional representative, said: “This a pro-active push to help bikers secure their machines and discourage thieves from their antisocial activities.
“MAG has raised funds to purchase a limited number of quality locks and chains which we will donate to learners and young riders.”
Steve said the police were actively pursuing thieves in local neighbourhoods.
He added: “MAG sees motorcycles as an existing solution to climate change as they have a low carbon and low congestion footprint.
“As such, responsible motorcycling should be encouraged.
“Everyone, police, bikers and local authorities need to work together to cut out motorcycle theft and bring the criminals to justice.”
